From mathieu.bastian at gephi.org Fri Mar 30 06:53:36 2012 From: mathieu.bastian at gephi.org (Mathieu Bastian) Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2012 21:53:36 -0700 Subject: [gephi-announce] Gephi 0.8.1 beta released & Call for Students Google Summer of Code Message-ID: Hi everyone, We released the 0.8.1 beta version of Gephi .?This release delivers a complete new timeline component for dynamic network analysis with many new features. We're also happy to announce we are part of the Google Summer of Code again and are looking for talented students to join our development team. *Google Summer of Code 2012* We are looking forward welcoming students for the summer again! Applications are open and the deadline is April 6. Please spread the word around you, this is a great opportunity for students to contribute to a large open-source project. If you know students interested in contributing (and receive a Google's paycheck) please send them a note. Project ideas include: * Legend module ? Integrate a legend in the Preview module * Flexible Table Importer ? Create a generic network creation wizard from data tables * Cloud Gephi ? Build an online gallery and bring some of Gephi?s features to the cloud * Force Directed Edge Bundling ? Implement Force Directed Edge Bundling algorithm * Statistics Reports and HTML5 Charts ? Improve statistic report and port existing charts to HTML5+Javascript * Statistics Unit Tests ? Add unit tests to the statistical algorithms * Graph Streaming ? Improve Graph Streaming API and interconnect GraphStream?s dynamic graph event model with Gephi Official proposals are on the wiki: https://wiki.gephi.org/index.php/Google_Summer_Of_Code_2012 *New 0.8.1 beta features* * New Timeline: Rewrite of the timeline component with better control, date readability and more. The timeline now let's you manually set the bounds and interval for more accurate navigation. More importantly, it now has a 'Play' button to animate the interval automatically and embeds a Sparkline chart. * Ranking now supports local and global scale: When manipulating the timeline or when filtering the graph, one can now select local or global scale for ranking. The newly introduced global scale simplifies comparaison between different time, as the scale remains the same (and therefore the color/size). * Modularity (Community detection) adds edge weight support and resolution setting. The resolution parameter essentially configures how much communities you want. * Self-loop filter: An additional edge filter to remove self-loops. * Teradata support: The database importer now supports Teradata. * New localizations: Go to Tools > Languages to change to the new Russian, Czech or Chinese locales. Consult the 40+ bugs fixed in this release on the release notes . *Plug-ins* Last november we migrated our source code from Launchpad to GitHub and have seen an increase of activity in plugin development. We also simplified the environment and wrote more documentation how to get started. We created a dedicated repository on GitHub and compiled a list of more than 20 different code examples on the Gephi Plugins Bootcamp . See the list of plug-ins: http://gephi.org/plugins/ *Toolkit* We updated the Gephi Toolkit to include 0.8.1 changes. Demos and tutorials on the . *Coming soon* Luiz Ribeiro is working on the final touches and documentation on the Python Console plugin. As we are thinking about the 0.9 roadmap, please join the discussion on the forum and tell us what you would like to have improved. To all who spread the word and join the Gephi community, thank you!
